Let’s go down to the Kumistavi Cave, also known as the Prometheus Cave, located near the town of Tskaltubo and about 20 km from Kutaisi, in the Imereti region, in western Georgia. After the discovery of the cave in 1984, it was almost immediately made a tourist attraction. Kumistavi is the largest cave in Georgia. Only a tenth of it is open to tourists, and even so, a walk through the cave takes almost an hour. Inside there are underground lakes and rivers, there is very high humidity and there are bats, which, however, do not bother tourists, because they fly very high.

We will climb Mount Khvamli – a limestone massif in western Georgia, forming a watershed between the valleys of the Rioni and Tskhenis-Tskali rivers. The mountain is located in the Lechkhumi region, not far from Kutaisi. It looks more like a plateau, gently rising from the north and breaking off to the south with 500-meter cliffs. The Khvamli massif is clearly visible from Kutaisi, and its view is impressive. The highest point is located on these very cliffs and is 2002 meters. According to ancient Greek myths, it was to this mountain that Zeus chained Prometheus.

The Georgian chronicle “Kartlis Tskhovreba” reports that treasures were kept in a cave on Khvamli. Later, in the 18th century, it was mentioned by the Georgian prince-historian Vakhushti Bagrationi in the History of the Kingdom of Georgia. It is assumed that the richest treasury of Georgia from the era of Queen Tamar was hidden in a cave on the mountain before the invasion of the Mongols. Many expeditions have been carried out here. A cave was found inside which was a medieval fortress. And on the walls of the cave, drawings of celestial bodies were found, which are dated to the sixth millennium BC.

We will see the two most beautiful waterfalls Ofitara and Rachkha, the streams of water of which cascade down onto moss-covered stones.
