Located at an altitude of 2200 m above sea level, the village of Ushguli is considered, according to some sources, one of the highest permanent settlements in Europe.
About 70 families (up to 200 people) live in Ushguli, there is a school, the surroundings are covered with snow for six months a year, and the road to the regional center Mestia is often blocked.
The Ushguli ensemble is a valuable architectural and historical monument, largely due to which Upper Svaneti was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The village has preserved traditional Svan tower houses of the 9th-12th centuries. On a hill near the village of Zhibiani is the Church of Our Lady (Lamaria in Svan), built in the 11th century.
On the way to Svaneti, we will also stop near the largest hydroelectric power station in the South Caucasus – the Inguri hydroelectric power station, the arch dam of which has been awarded the status of a cultural monument of national importance.
